Footnotes

  1. ^ Bonn was the capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990 and was, at the time, smaller than West Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Essen, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Bremen, Duisburg, Hannover, Nuremberg, Bochum, Wuppertal, and Bielefeld.
  2. ^ Most countries do not recognize Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem, and so maintain their embassies in other cities, mostly Tel Aviv.
  3. ^ By some definitions of the term "country", England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales are all countries. The capital cities of these four entities are London, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff respectively. In Scotland, the city of Glasgow is larger than the capital, Edinburgh.
